We just saw the Salton Sea documentary and it inspired a trip one of these days. Is there a particular place or town that is more interesting or convenient than others down there?

Re: Salton Sea
Sat, December 29, 2007 - 8:31 PMi drove around the salton sea trying to find the housing development that was abandoned after it flooded. i was totally unsuccessful in finding abandoned buildings though. they are out there though, and i want to see them...
nearby is salvation mountain and slab city, both totally worth a visit. chasterus is building a home in slab city. i may check it out if i wind up that far south this coming week. -

Sat, December 29, 2007 - 8:32 PMi should add that slab city & salvation mountain are just outside of niland, ca. east side of salton sea if i recall correctly. salvation mountain is a big folk art, well, mountain. definitely worth seeing.

Re: Salton Sea
Sat, December 29, 2007 - 9:31 PMpk, I haven't been through Bombay since 2002 but there were abandon buildings there at the old shoreline. Also RVs and and various other vehicles, etc encrusted with salt. If anyone goes through Bombay and goes down to the "waterfront" there, a report (and pics) on conditions there would be appreciated. -

Sat, December 29, 2007 - 9:33 PMHmm...I seem to recall that there was another abandon settlement elsewhere...possibly in the wildlife refuge nowadays? Find an old map of the area and look for communities shown there but not on the newer maps. Libraries can often be a help there if you can't find an old topo on the Internet. -

Wed, January 2, 2008 - 2:15 PMTrue...if you aren't nursing an old Mac to very end of life.
(But that does remind me that I can do that with little fear, now that I've got a 9550 Pro in the ol' G4!)
Actually, that's not entirely true since you can also use google maps (or one of those OTHER world map offerings). -

Re: Salton Sea
Tue, January 22, 2008 - 10:25 PMwe went to bombay beach. it's not an abandoned neighborhood - there are some abandoned structures, but there are also a lot of (mostly janky) occupied houses and mobile homes. lots of dead fish and barnacles on the beach. very weird place.
we didn't find any abandoned developments, just a few abandoned buildings of varying degrees of interest. i tried driving toward what may have once been a neighborhood but it quickly became clear that the road had been consumed by the mud flats, and there was to be no driving in that direction without becoming very very stuck.
i later learned that there are bubbling mud pots on the western side. that would have been interesting to see. we did find the hot springs near slab city. nice hot water, not the most pleasant spot to soak though. -

Wed, January 23, 2008 - 3:16 PMThanks for the report!
I was told that Bombay shore was one of the most pro-photographed places in America when I was there. In fact, while I was riding around with Harve in 2002, some pro photographers showed up and started shooting the shoreline; did you get any 2008 pictures to add to the tribe album? -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

Re: Salton Sea
Wed, January 30, 2008 - 9:45 PMthere are several funky hot spring resorts/rv parks on the east side that i enjoyed many years ago. they tend to fill up with snowbird geezers who can be quite amusing and any way hanging around them will prepare you for the oh-too-soon day when you become one yourself. happy soaking

Re: Salton Sea
Sat, February 2, 2008 - 5:59 AMSeems there's more to see on the east side. I personally wouldn't know, I've only seen it from the west. Here's a shot of some of the extreme minimalism you can discover on the west side, though...
